Singular noun to plural changing sometimes become confusing for students of class 3. First of all we must made children realise the use of any grammatical subject by giving practical examples. And the example should be behavioral.
Here suppose a children went to market and bought an apple or apples, then he try to say this in English. He may say to shopkeeper.
Please give me apple.-WRONG
Please give me an apple.-CORRECT
Now let us decide which one is correct. By practice of habit of reading English book he will say that first one is wrong and second one is correct. Now here comes the use of singular pronoun.
He may also say to the shopkeeper in case of more than one bought apples. as:
Please give me an apples.-WRONG
Please give me apples.-CORRECT
Let us first watch this video after that I will explain the rule of changing singular to plural in very simple way.
The rules of changing singular to plural are:
It is very general to add s or es at the end of the word to make it plural. But where 's' will be added or where 'es' will be added.
Rule 1: Add 's' to all the words except the words ending with CH, SS, SH, O,X to make it plural.
I am illustrating few examples.
Boy--------Boys
Girl--------Girls
etc.
Rule 2: If any words end with CH, SS, SH, O,X, Z then add 'es'.
For example:
Mango----------Mangoes
Bush------------Bushes
Dress---------- Dresses
Box------------Boxes
Buzz---------- Buzzes
Glass ----------Glasses
Rule 3: There are few words which end with 'o' but to make it plural only 's' is added. There is one noticeable point here for removing confusion from the rule 2 .but I don't want to confuse the class 3 children. So they only remember these types of words.
For example:
Cello----------Cellos
Logo----------Logos
Photo--------Photos
Piano---------Pianos
Ratio---------Ratios
Rule 4: If any word ends with 'f' , 'fe' then to turn it into plural replace 'f' or 'fe' by 'ves' . See examples and the above video also.
half----------halves
leaf-----------leaves
thief-----------thieves
self---------------selves
knife----------knives
wife-----------wives
life-----------lives
Rule 5: Few words get completely changed in plural form. These words have to be memorised. There is no trick for these words. e.g.
man----------men
ox---------oxen
foot---------feet
mouse---------mice
person--------people
child----------children
* Few words remains unchanged in its plural form.
sheep------------sheep
deer------------deer
fish-------------fish
